Dubai Information

Dubai is located south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai is the second largest emirate by area, but has tghe largest population. The only two emirates to possess veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country's legislature are Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Dubai was formally established in the early 19th century by the Al Abu Falasa clan of Bani Yas, and remained under clan control when the United Kingdom assumed the protection of Dubai in 1892 (the earliest recorded mention of Dubai is in 1095, with the earliest settlement from 1800.

Dubai's geographical location made it an important trading hub and, later an important port. The town joined the newly independent country of Qatar in 1966 to set up a new monetary unit, the same year oil was discovered. The oil economy lead to a massive influx of foreign workers, quickly expanding the city by about 300% and bringing in international oil interests.

After the UK left the area in 1971, the modern emirate of Dubai was created and Dubai, together with Abu Dhabi and five other emirates, formed the United Arab Emirates. In 1979, a free trade zone was built around the Jebel Ali port, which allowed foreign companies unrestricted import of labour and export capital.

Although the Gulf War of 1990 had a negative financial effect on the city, as depositors withdrew their money and traders withdrew their trade, the city later recovered in a changing political climate and thrived.

Today, Dubai has become a global city and a business hub. Although it's economy was originally built on the oil industry, the emirate'scurrent main revenues are from tourism, property, and financial services. In fact, Dubai has recently attracted world attention through many innovative large construction projects and sports events.
